People often quote the book of Esther regarding God’s perfect timing. But this book, which doesn’t even mention God by name, tells us quite a lot about His character and His love for His people.
It’s easy to get caught up in the Hollywood romance of Esther and King Ahasuerus. However, a close reading of the scripture tells a slightly different story. Except for the king’s original infatuation with Esther, which resulted in her being made queen, there is no evidence of a deep love between them.
The truth is, the king was not a nice man. When Haman approaches the king with his plan to alienate an entire ethnic group, King Ahasuerus doesn’t hesitate to turn over his signet, telling Haman, “deal with the people as you think best.” Nice little side-step away from the responsibility of mass murder there, Mr. King.
As far as the king’s relationship with Esther, when Mordecai asks Esther to approach the King, she admits she hasn’t seen him in over a month.
From just these two instances, you can form a good picture of the nature of this man.
Even so, when Esther appears trembling before him in the inner court, King Ahasuerus receives her with favor, extending to her his golden scepter. This man who, without a second thought, gave the order for thousands to be killed now offers his queen, “Whatever you request, up to half my kingdom, it shall be granted you.”
As we read, we see him make this offer to Esther two more times. We shouldn’t take the king’s offer lightly or gloss over it as mere words. The same offer by another king hundreds of years later cost John the Baptizer his life.
Thankfully, in this instance, the king’s offer resulted in deliverance for the Jews.
This reveals many things about the nature and omnipotence of our God. But what I want you to see today is the lesson of Luke 11.
If this king, as evil as he was, would give good gifts, even up to half his kingdom, upon Esther, whom he favored in such a shallow manner, how much more will our heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him? (Luke 11:10-13)
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!" Luke 11:13
How much greater is His kingdom offered to us through Christ Jesus? In the story of Esther, we can see God’s great love and care, not only for all His children but for each one - you and me - of His children.
No matter what you’re facing in your life at this moment, God sees you. He extends the Scepter, Jesus, and He offers Himself.
His wisdom, His strength, His presence. Whatever you need in this moment. He offers it to you.
Step boldly into His throne room, touch the tip of the Scepter, and receive it.
Amen. So grateful for 'His wisdom, His strength, His presence.' Where would we be, who would we be without Jesus.
Thank you, June, for these encouraging reflections of God's unswerving faithfulness and desire to give us good gifts through His Scepter, Jesus! Love and blessings to you!
